More than anything else, my journey with my blinding eye disease has taught me how important it is to live in the moment. I've discovered that nearly all of us are dealing with something really difficult in our lives. For some of us, it's a degenerative disease. For others, it's a life-threatening illness. For still others, it's a death of a loved one. What I've realized is that none of us are immune to disease or death, that life can change in an instant, and that all we have for certain is now. So we better make Now count.
About the Author
Ingrid Ricks is a Seattle-based journalist, author, speaker and teen mentor who leverages the new world of digital publishing and print-on-demand to give at-risk teens a voice. Using her award-winning debut memoir Hippie Boy: A Girl's Story as a teaching guide, she recently co-launched WeAreAbsolutelyNotOkay.org, a nationally recognized mentoring/publishing program that helps teens find their voice by writing and publishing their personal stories Ingrid's essays and stories have been published in Salon, Ladies' Home Journal, The Advocate and a variety of other publications. She has also shared her stories on the national NPR show, Snap Judgment and KUOW Presents, a Seattle NPR affiliate. Ingrid is the author of three books: Hippie Boy: A Girl's Story, a coming-of-age memoir, Focus, a memoir about her journey with the blinding eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa, and A Little Book of Mormon (and Not So Mormon) Stories, a short story collection. Fabulous and poignant

I devoured this book last night. Simply could not put it down. I am familiar with Ingrid's back story having read the terrific "Hippie Boy." But this is the first time I've seen all of her writing about learning to live with RP in one place. And wow, does it pack a punch. From the terrifying diagnosis to the harrowing life lessons learned in Africa, we follow Ingrid on a path that is both horribly upsetting and so rewarding. Would that I could find such clarity with only a fraction of these challenges! I love the personal touches about her marriage and children. And no honesty is spared in writing about parents, in-laws and the medical profession. Buy this. Read it in a sitting or two. And then pass it on. Brava to a brave author and a fabulous story teller.

Eye-opening book about progressive blindness

"The wall ran into me."
That's what happens to Ingrid Ricks as her eyesight deteriorates to 2% of normal, according to her eye-opening new memoir, "FOCUS." But encroaching blindness from Retinitis Pigmentosis is not something Ingrid accepts lying down. She fights it with the biggest weapon in her arsenal: denial.
Unfortunately denial does not stop the progression of Ingrid's genetic disease and when a friend refuses to let her drive carpool, the truth of her loss hits home. She decides to do everything possible to limit the toll on her husband John and their two daughters by seeking out a specialist, Dr. Damon Miller, in California. Despite the financial strain the family is already under, Ingrid spends four days in treatment and with home therapy her vision improves. Slightly.
But Ingrid's biggest hole in her life is not vision. It is a lack of trust. Ingrid worries that if she gives up control - and opens up as a needy person to John and the world - then she will not be cared for. She will be as helpless as the children she once chronicled suffering from AIDS in Africa. And while fleeing from victimhood worked when Ingrid was young, now her future requires embracing vulnerability and not running away.
Ingrid's journey as her life becomes ever smaller in scope touches the universal and offers a clear look at something we all fear. And that wall Ingrid ran into? Maybe there's a Buddhist saying that you are the wall. And by admitting so, you can move through it.

Gripped me on the first page!!

I read this book in less than a day! From the moment I opened the book and started to read I was instantly hooked. The tears started pouring down my face as I was taken to the doctors office, where Ingrid Ricks, author of the book was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa a degenerative retinal disorder, and was determined to be legally blind while only in her early 30's. In this life changing moment she is set on an entirely new path in her life. This book is an emotionally rivoting and accurate medical portrayal of the issues that people with Retinitis Pigmentosa face. She describes very clearly and vividly the emotional rollercoaster that this diagnosis took her on.
This book is a must read for ANYONE who has a friend, family member, or themselves who are dealing with Retinitis Pigmentosa!!!
Ingrid gives great insite into the lives that a those of us with RP (retinitis pigmentosa) must live with on a day to day basis. For some of us with RP we are neither fully sighted nor are we totally blind!!! Society has a lot to learn about this concept.
Can't wait to read more about living life with Retinitis Pigmentosa in future books by Ingrid Ricks!!!!
