Vaccines 2.0: The Careful Parent's Guide to Making Safe Vaccination Choices for Your Family, by Mark Blaxill, Dan Olmsted

The CDC’s bloated vaccine schedule has doubled since 1988, after the federal government gave pharmaceutical companies immunity from lawsuits. Autism and other childhood disorders like asthma, ADHD, juvenile diabetes and digestive ailments have skyrocketed. And parents are understandably nervous, desperate for objective guidance that takes those concerns seriously.
Vaccines 2.0 looks at the lengthy roster of today’s recommended injections, the documented risks that accompany them, and helps parents choose a schedule based on unbiased, uncensored, unconflicted science. From whether to get a flu shot during pregnancy--and how to avoid dangerous mercury if you do--to the Hep B shot within hours of birth, to the controversial Gardasil vaccine for preteens, Vaccines 2.0/i> provides the tools to decide for yourself.

The three sections cover: Why should you care? What should you know? What can you do? The exclusive Risk-Reward Assessment assigns a numerical score to each of the 14 recommended vaccines. Also included is information on learning to spot, report and treat side effects; talking to your doctor and finding a sympathetic one if you can't, and comparing alternative schedules if you decide to delay or skip shots. When it comes to your child, it's your choice. Vaccines 2.0 will give you the information you need to choose wisely.

Consumers' Report on Vaccines
By Dan E. Burns, Ph.D.
Refreshing, intriguing, and empowering. Vaccines 2.0 is a reference book, a Consumer’s Report, and a survivor’s guide for the next generation. At its core is a shot-by-shot risk/benefit rating plan. Then a section that takes the CDC-mandated vaccine schedule apart and shows how to put it back together to meet your family’s needs.

Along the way, Blaxill and Olmsted reveal the “mandated” vaccine schedule to be a Winchester mystery house, under construction for generations, no master plan. I was fascinated by the history of the various add-on wings, secret passages, ghost rooms, and behind-the-scenes stories of how this gerrymandered maze of a mansion was built.

Yes, vaccines save lives. And damage lives. I wish I’d had this book when I needed it. Especially the brief, penultimate chapter, “How to Prevent Vaccine Injuries,” which distills decades of lessons learned the hard way into practical pointers. With this book in hand, I could have mapped a safer path toward a healthy future for my son.

Pregnant? Sister, daughter, friend expecting? Grandchild on the way? Protect their future. Get your hands on Vaccines 2.0.

Anyone making vaccine choices for their children should read this book
By Timothy D. Lundeen
The authors are pro-choice and pro-vaccines: they just want to help parents to make well-considered decisions, based on the potential benefits and risks for each vaccine.

They are well aware of the all-too-real vaccine injuries we see, and the ongoing epidemic of asthma, autoimmune disease, learning disabilities, allergies, and autism, all of which accelerated along with the increases in the vaccine schedule starting in the late 1980s. This is not a "don't trust what you are seeing with your own eyes, everything is fine, vaccines are perfectly safe" fable. Their table of benefits and risks breaks things down into smaller pieces, and is based on established science and real outcomes, which makes it easier to evaluate the tradeoffs.

The book has a good section on how to work with your health-care provider and to manage legal issues if you don't want to give your children the full recommended schedule, or want to delay some of the vaccines.

There is some more information I'd like to add:

(1) There is emerging research suggesting that any immunizations before the age of 2 creates higher risks for asthma, autoimmune disease, allergies, and neurological damage. You can google "hilary butler vaccines and neonatal immune development" for a helpful 3-part series.

(2) The evaluations of the vaccines are somewhat subjective, and everyone needs to adjust these based on their priorities and what they've learned.

(3) The "options" chapter makes it seem as if you have to homeschool in order to not give any vaccines. However, in most states there are exemptions that allow unvaccinated kids to attend public schools.

(4) It is important to know how to treat these illnesses, because both vaccinated and unvaccinated people can get all of them. (For vaccines, some people don't "take" and never have immunity, others get some immunity but it wanes over time.) For whooping cough, Dr Suzanne Humphries, MD, has an excellent proven protocol available through her web site. For measles, high-dose Vitamin A is extremely effective, you can get dosage recommendations from the CDC. For all illnesses, Vitamin C given every 1-2 hours to bowel tolerance is extremely helpful. Do not give fever reducers, especially acetaminophen (Tylenol).

I would suggest two more excellent books. From Dr Suzanne Humphries, Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History. She is an MD who has spent a lot of time learning about vaccines, their risks and benefits. From Dr Tetyana Obukhanych, her book Vaccine Illusion, is also excellent. She is a PhD immunologist who has worked at Harvard and Stanford.

Excellent resource in many ways, one major problem though
By D. Saul Weiner
This is a very good book, which provides much useful information about vaccines, the diseases they treat, the history behind each vaccine, different schedules parents might use, and much more. The framework for evaluating each vaccine is sensible and the authors are to be applauded for bringing rationality to an issue on which many people have succumbed to hysteria and ignorance.

The reason I downgraded this review to 4 stars is that I think that the authors are mistaken when they give credit to vaccines for wiping out smallpox and polio. Now one might say that this is irrelevant, because this history has no real bearing on what parents should do today. However, the fanatical support of vaccination by many doctors and laymen today rests upon these cornerstone myths. These myths terrorize people into thinking that without vaccines we would have all sorts of deadly and debilitating diseases running rampant. As a society, we will never see the day that people approach these issues rationally until these myths are laid to rest. It is therefore imperative that all writers who are trying to help others get their arms around vaccination get their history right.
