GREAT FUN & yet very educational...understanding how the brain really works!

This is the first classic book on visual illusions by J Richard Block, the author, who also wrote a second book entitled 'Seeing Double'. Both are printed in large format. In fact, there is also a card deck which amplifies the earlier book.

Both books discussed the phenomena of human perception through hundreds of perplexing visual illusions & mind-bending eye tricks gathered from around the world.

The entire collection in the two books is definitely amazing and unique in some way.

The best learning experiences I got out of these two wonderful books are a greater understanding - & appreciation - of how the brain really works. I often use many of the visual illusions to demonstrate the principal operating principles of the brain, particularly the salient aspects of selective recognition and patterning. I have also found that some of them have been very useful in demonstrating cognitive traps & pattern interrupts, especially in the context of personal creativity.

Although the visual illusions are fun to play with, I find them very educational, just as what I have elaborated.

There is another type of visual illusions, known as random dot stereograms (some people call them 3D visual illusions), which are more fun but somewhat harder to play with. Nevertheless, they are also very educational, especially in understanding - & appreciating - how the brain really works!

the publishers ruined this wonderful book

The concept and content of this book are amazing, however the publishers and printers have totally ruined it. The book is badly printed, and the whole book is in black and white although some of the illusion pictures only work in color. If you google some of the images, it then only becomes apparent what the authors were trying to demonstrate. a 6th grade child with basic photoshop skills could have tidied up the images and would have made it a great book. I must compliment Amazon for the great effort they have made to resolve my disappointment, and the concern they have shown.

All-right,but not one of the better books on Optical Illusions.

As a longtime enthusiest of Optical Illusions;I found this book somewhat hard to review.There are some things about it that are pretty good,while there are other things,to put it simply, mundane.First,the good things.It has a good hard cover and dust jacket;which would make it a fairly good choice for elementary schools or libraries.It might also be a fairly good choice for home use if one just wanted a simple basic book of Optical Illusions.The other things that separate this book from the many other excellent one on the subject are:First there are no color illustrations ,and many illusions,including many in this book, cry for the use of color.This is obviously seen by glancing at the back of the dust jacket.Two of the illusions shown there don't even work without color.While the book has a lot of illusions,over 250,almost all of them are classic and found in most books of illusions.In other words,if you have ever seen ,or own any books of Illusions;don't expect to see anything new or fresh here.There is usually a bit of explanation with each illusion;but it is more off a caption and very brief in history,originator or scientificr,mathematical,or artistic explanation.The Index is quite detailed and should help finding the illustrations.There is also good list of references ,but hardly any mention of the many excellent books on Optical Illusions that have been published over the years,and on ones that I have reviewed,such as by M.C. Escher,Sarcone and Waeber,Seckel,and others.What you get instead, is a lot of references to Psychology books,magazines and papers that would be the stock and trade of University Psychology departments ;and by the way,where the authors got most of the illusions in this bbook.Really,not much use for the average reader.This is also indicated by the long detailed list of copyright acknowledgements.
I might also add,as I have also done on some of my laster Reviews,that there is now a plethora of information and Optical Illusions to be found on the Net and YouTube.Here you can see the importance of color,and partucularly the application of motion. .When you see thethe silhouette of the balet dancer spin one way,then another,well,it's a slam dunk!

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2014 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTAL FUNCTIONS, the 2014 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for PRECALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning.

Pre Calc isn't too fun, but...

Pre Calc isn't too fun, but the answers to the odd numbered problems are in the back. It's helpful if you don't have someone to tell you the answers so that you know you're doing things right. You're probably going to buy the book anyway because it's for a class, but I just thought I'd let you know it's alright. All of these books are way over priced though. Better off renting it.

If you have a choice, avoid this book. It is TERRIBLE! Very unclear and very erratic. You look through the study material, everything seems clear and logical. Then you start doing the exercises, and suddenly you realize that you don't understand anything at all! It looks like either different people wrote the study material and the exercises, or they were just put together from different sources. A lot (and I mean A LOT) of tasks are absolutely random, so you sit there like "where the hell did this come from? it's never been mentioned before!" So you have to go online and find similar examples with solutions to get the idea, or bug the instructor every friggin day! Why did I pay for the book then????
I'm aiming for medical school, so math is very important to me, and I must understand everything today in order to be able to move forward successfully tomorrow. With this book I am struggling. I can't afford a B, or God forbid a C.
Not recommended. At all.

About the Author
Christine McMahon Sutton grew up in Iowa and is a graduate of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She was a news reporter until 1986, when she joined the staff of the Iowa Medical Society in West Des Moines. At IMS, she was vice president of communications and editor of Iowa Medicine. She was an editor and health care writer for Oklahoma Magazine in Tulsa from 2001-2006. In 2006, she wrote the historical text One Hundred Years of Medicine in Oklahoma, which was published in the Oklahoma State Medical Association Journal on the occasion of that state’s centennial. She also wrote historical articles for the Oklahoma Dental Association Journal. In 2009, Christine and her former co-worker Cheri Jensen founded Management and Event Services, a home-based company that provides administrative services for the Iowa Association of County Medical Examiners, the Iowa Association of Pathologists and the Iowa Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Christine has two children and three grandchildren. She and her dog Lucy live quietly in a small town in Iowa.

Inspiring, informative, amazing

Christine McMahon Sutton has created an invaluable resource for caregivers. In touching and honest essays, she documents the journey she shared with her husband Gery--a thriving physician who specialized in geriatric care--from the time he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's to the celebration of his life four years later. This book is filled with countless moments of "it's not just me" recognition (financial struggles, frustration, mind-numbing fatique, guilt, grief, confusion, insensitivity, anger, to name a few), but it is so much more. It is a hard-working guide to being an effective and compassionate advocate, to living in the moment, to remembering to laugh and to cherishing life, even when it deals the cruelest of blows.

I knew Dr. Sutton, from being a nurse at hospital in Claremore. He would spend time in the evenings when making his rounds, talking to us about his kids and our kids. He would bring some of them with him on weekends to make his rounds. He would take them with him to the nursing homes on weekends. Everyone loved Dr. Sutton. My best friend was a patient of his. We had gone to nursing school together, she became sick and died. He was very good about talking to us and helping us to understand this tragedy. He attended her funeral service. He was truly an amazing man and physician.
I was blessed to have worked with him. The book reaffirms what a good person and Doctor he was. He was just a down to earth good human being.

What a treasure trove this book is!

What a treasure trove this book is! And it's not just for Buddhists. Anyone could read, enjoy, and be changed by this book. It's highly entertaining. It's profound with being overly esoteric. It's humane, poignant, and insightful. There has been nothing like this before that I have read. It compares in some ways with Lama Anagarika Govinda's `Way of the White Clouds' and Chadud Tulku Rinpoche's `Lord of the Dance' - but it deals with times and places closer to hand. It makes gripping and compulsive reading. The footnotes were a little intimidating - but I soon worked out that it wasn't always necessary to read them. I would advise general readers to look at the footnotes on the second reading. I will definitely be re-reading this book and referring to my favourite stories again and again. Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche, the author's teacher, comes to life in an extremely powerful way and their interactions are painted with impressive candour and vividness. The stories told by Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche are stories that some people may have heard before from Tibetan Lamas - but they are presented in a way that is both fresh and compelling. The author and his teacher explore the stories in a way that is dramatic, harrowing and humorous by turn. I felt as I read, both that I'd give my eye teeth to have been there in the author's place - and the same time to have escaped his worst moments! You learn a lot about Vajrayana Buddhism as you go along - but you're never overfaced with it. The best part of the book for me was the atmosphere - I could almost taste it. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved life and wanted to look deeper into it.

And engaging introduction to Vajrayana

The essential component to practicing the Tantric teachings is the student's relationship to the teacher, and this book gives a wonderful look into that relationship. The teacher here leads his student to a deeper understanding of dharma through telling and discussing traditional stories of great masters. The interchanges between teacher and student are vivid and engaging as well as profoundly meaningful. Highly recommended.

[It's an odd reader who finds reviewing books on Amazon their best venue for cheap shots at their authors-- with no reference to the book's style or content whatsoever. I am surprised that Amazon allows such bad behavior.]

I have read a number of books in this vein-- remembrances of Western students of their Asian teachers; some of them are touching and informative, and I've enjoyed them a great deal. But I don't think one of them conveys, nearly so well, the electricity of the meeting of minds that is the student-teacher relationship at its most transformative. That the book is so wonderful, is a tribute to the author's devotion to and clarity about, teachers whose like the internet age is unlikely to foster. Thank you Ngakpa Chogyam for your excellent memory, your vivid story-telling abilities, and for sharing your rare good fortune to have met with such remarkable beings.

Please read "Nonviolent Communication" instead.

I want to highly recommend that you read Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life
instead of this book.

"Speak Peace" is essentially a watered down version of "Nonviolent Communication",
which contains more of the same anecdotal stories about Marshall's experiences;
and very few of those are finished
and/or don't include the details on how he resolved the issue.
Half of the time it reads like a sales pitch for taking a course,
or buying the book I'm recommending.
A direct example:
"Sadly, very few people have much of a feelings vocabulary,
and I see the cost of that quite often in my work.
If you would like to see an extensive list of feelings,
see the chapter on identifying and expressing feelings in my book
'Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life'."

I genuinely hope you read Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life
I plan on reading it for a second time,
because it does include those practical details (which I think this book lacks)
in such abundance that I really need to review it.

Much more than the title says..

This book is not a 'read only' book, it is a 'do it/work on it' book. It's about making peace at three different, but so very much connected and intertwined, levels: a world of conflict; a personal relationship of conflict; a person of conflict. So many people speak of peace or about peace, but they bring no peace. And why not? Because one has to be at peace with oneself before one can truly bring peace in ones relationship or in the world. This book gives us the tools to do just that. We can make peace with ourselves and from there bring it into 'the outer world'. This is one of the most important books I have read for a long, long time. This book is learning (I am not finished yet by far..) me to be at peace with myself, which is something completely different from 'control myself' or terms like that. It gives me a milder, softer point of view about who I am, what I do, and why I did things that I did, in the way that I did them. Because of that, or together with that, it is also learning me to understand, and connect with, other people from a different, milder, softer point of view. And yet at the same time it makes me stronger. It is not about a weak 'peace' such as in 'avoiding conflict' or 'giving in'. But about a strong peace, because we can (learn to) see clearer what is happening inside ourselves and the other person(s) and act in a way that both we and our 'opponents' come out winning. This book is not only about speaking peace in a world of conflict. This is a book about finding peace within yourself and through that, being able to truly bring peace into your world, it is a book about healing and a book about 'winning together'; a book about hope for a split up and violent world. I love it and recommend it with all my heart.

A good followup to NVC

"Speak Peace In A World Of Conflict" is a necessary book in these challenging times. There is so much tension in the world that it is difficult to think positive, much less speak in a manner that is compassionate. You may be familiar with Rosenberg's other book, "Non-Violent Communication". Well, that book transformed my thinking about how I communicated with others, especially with my family. I always prided myself on my 'clear communication' but I didn't realize that my communication was filled with sarcasm, aggression and control. After reading that book, I learned how to LISTEN emphatically and to realize that we are all basically trying to 'get our needs met' when we communicate. This created a paradigm shift in myself and I learned to listen also to my own needs, which helped me to be more clear, more kind and less abrasive.

"Speak Peace" is a great follow-up book to "Non Violent Communication". It gives real life examples and more depth to the whole concept. If you are uncertain about NVC, this book will clarify it further. I am continuing to apply the principles and I have noticed a new warmth and joy in my family relationships. Recently, we had a very trying situation that brought out a lot of anger, hard feelings and misunderstandings - by following NVC, I was able to reduce the negativity and diffuse the conflict. Very healing stuff. I recommend any of Rosenberg's books.
