Exactly what we were looking for.
By TMolina
Ordered this for my husband & it's exactly what he needed. Saved $30+ over the college book store price.
Be sure to read the product description before ordering. Being offered is a hard cover book & workbook, at two different price points. When ordering online, I really rely on product reviews, and had I relied on previous reviews from folks that didn't look carefully at what they were ordering I wouldn't have made the purchase. Thankfully I read & felt comfortable knowing Amazon would stand behind their product had it not have been what I needed. Thanks Amazon!

I bought their earlier book and learned refrigeration from and passed my test without going to school. I gave my copy to a younger guy hoping he will do the same as I did...I didn't want to be without a copy, so I bought the newer edition which has some of the newer refrigerants in it.

The Great Impersonation: How the Anti-christ has Deceived the Whole World, by Eli James

There is abroad in the Christian world a prevalent feeling that evil should not be admonished or openly criticized. The Bible, on the other hand, warns the Christian watchman to broadcast the warning whenever it is needed. The Christian ostrich who has his head in the sand doesn’t want to offend his oppressor, presumably because he doesn’t feel the oppression badly enough to complain about it. This book contains the record of that oppression, an oppression which has often achieved the status of genocide against millions of Christians, especially in the Twentieth Century, the most violent century in the history of man.

Biblical Truth for the Churchgoer and the professing Christian
By Culdee
Eli James in this book, does not mince his words. This is NOT the milk of The Word (The Bible). IT IS THE STRONG MEAT. Perhaps this book will be too honest, too straightforward for many who have been "educated" into ".... the leaven of the Pharisees WHICH IS HYPOCRACY". We are most certainly in the End Times as explained in Scripture; so the time is ripe for all of YAHWEH's People to prepare themselves. This book will assist such people to put oil in their lamp. Why, after 2000 years of "organised Christian religion", is the world in such a mess? This book, studied in conjunction with one's Bible, goes a long way to explain the problem AND the people behind the problem. Seekers after The Truth who read this book have nothing to lose and much to gain. I recommend this book to "Christians" and especially all Biblicists.

The True Chosen People Of The Bible
By Paul Pen
Finally a well researched Christian book that is easy to read and understand. The book reveals the biggest identity theft of all time perpetrated on the believing, true sons and daughters of the seed-line Jacob/Israel. The book proves this to be the Christian nations of the Abrahamic Covenant.
The imposters have temporary dominion through their fiat currency, propaganda media, endless wars and occupied governments. It is no wonder the Judeo-Christian Churches are 501c3 corporations, that won't reveal these truths and Yahweh's (God's) real name.
The author has done much research into the original Greek and Hebrew text of that time to demonstrate the mistranslations that have bestowed much confusion on the Christian world. The bible takes on a different meaning when understanding these translations and is much more understandable to the average layman. This is a must read!

Best Book Available on Synagogue of Satan
By bransonfib
Eli James' book is no doubt the best book available today on the identity of the Israelites versus the Synagogue of Satan as mentioned in Revelation. What should be agravating to the Christian people is that we have to go to Eli at all to get the truth. Where are the Christian preachers on this subject? Missing in action for sure because they know that once they correctly identify the enemy of Yahweh they'll lose their paid positions as the leader of the Church and be blacklisted from the industry. Because that's what the modern day Church is, it's a corporation, under the control of the State and/or Federal Government. At least Eli can tell us the truth. There's very little else available these days that's well researched.

Golden Holocaust: Origins of the Cigarette Catastrophe and the Case for Abolition, by Robert N. Proctor

The cigarette is the deadliest artifact in the history of human civilization. It is also one of the most beguiling, thanks to more than a century of manipulation at the hands of tobacco industry chemists. In Golden Holocaust, Robert N. Proctor draws on reams of formerly-secret industry documents to explore how the cigarette came to be the most widely-used drug on the planet, with six trillion sticks sold per year. He paints a harrowing picture of tobacco manufacturers conspiring to block the recognition of tobacco-cancer hazards, even as they ensnare legions of scientists and politicians in a web of denial. Proctor tells heretofore untold stories of fraud and subterfuge, and he makes the strongest case to date for a simple yet ambitious remedy: a ban on the manufacture and sale of cigarettes.

From the Inside Flap
“The great cause of global health is in Robert Proctor’s debt. Golden Holocaust is a model of impassioned scholarly research and advocacy. As Proctor so powerfully demonstrates, the time has come to hold the tobacco industry accountable for the massive disease, debility, and death that they produce around the world.”--Allan M. Brandt, author of The Cigarette Century

"Robert Proctor unpacks the sad history of an industrial fraud. His tightly reasoned exploration touches on all topics on which the tobacco makers lied repeatedly to Congress and the public."--Don Kennedy, President Emeritus, Stanford University and former Editor, Science

"This book is a remarkable compendium of evil. It will keep you spinning from page one through the last with a detailed description of how one of the most notorious industries in American history deceived and manipulated the public, the politicians, and the scientific community into allowing an age-old toxin to be breathed directly into the lungs of millions of Americans. It is the type of book that makes you wonder how, in God’s name, this could have happened?"-David Rosner, author of Deceit and Denial

"Proctor powerfully documents how a small number of tobacco companies caused a tragic, global epidemic. His account of this history and of the 'lessons learned' is relevant to the ongoing effort to end the tobacco epidemic and to efforts to control emerging pandemics of non-communicable diseases." --Jonathan M. Samet, M.D., M.S., Director, Institute for Global Health, University of Southern California

“Proctor weaves together the public historical record with inside details and insights from thousands of once secret industry documents. Anyone who cares about health, deception, science or politics will learn something new from this book.”-Stanton A. Glantz, Professor of Medicine, UC San Francisco, and author of The Cigarette Papers

"A powerful indictment of the world's deadliest industry"-John R. Seffrin, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, American Cancer Society

"By carefully analyzing formerly secret industry documents, Proctor has shown how cigarette manufacturers knew that the "filters" on virtually all cigarettes sold today are utterly fraudulent. His call for a ban is likely to change how we think about such devices; this excellent book is a must read for tobacco control and environmental activists alike."--Thomas E. Novotny, MD MPH, Former US Assistant Surgeon General and CEO, Cigarette Butt Pollution Project.

"Scholarly yet eminently readable, indeed gripping, this book asks us to consider what the end game for tobacco might look like. A must-read for policy makers and public health officials, and for anyone struggling against the tobacco industry in the field."--Professor Judith Mackay, Senior Advisor, World Lung Foundation, Hong Kong, China SAR"

"The machine-rolled cigarette is the single most deadly consumer product ever made. Proctor's powerful, witty, and wide-ranging book shows how we came to accept as normal the promotion and use of products that have caused a global epidemic of disease and death. But more importantly, he outlines a way to end this grim chapter in human history."--Ruth E. Malone, RN, PhD, FAAN, Editor, Tobacco Control

“This is the most important book on smoking in fifty years. Proctor’s unique mix of scholarship, readability, wit and political understanding tells a no-holds-barred story with conclusions that governments cannot afford to ignore. It will change the course of public health history.”--Professor Mike Daube, President, Australian Council on Smoking and Health

"Proctor draws masterfully from a vast archive of documents wrested from the industry, including many never before discussed, and mounts an unforgettable case about what the tobacco industry has done and what we must do about it. This is the book to help us understand what we must do to save lives."--Peter Galison, author of Einstein's Clocks, Poincaré’s Maps

"Golden Holocaust will stand indelibly as a landmark in the field of medicine and the history of science. It is a monument of committed scholarship and cool passion, making brilliant use of the new technics of data-mining to reveal a terrible calculus, while giving the lie to claims that advocacy must be the enemy of objectivity. Lives, far too many lives, depend on what this book contains."--Iain Boal, Birkbeck College, London and Guggenheim Fellow in Science and Technology

"Robert Proctor draws an unvarnished conclusion: that the tobacco industry, and the men who led it, were evil, plain and simple. They knowingly sold a product that, when used as intended, killed people. And then they conspired to suppress the evidence. A truly important book, appropriately horrifying
By John R Mashey
I have read Allan Brandt's The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America, David Michaels'Doubt is Their Product: How Industry's Assault on Science Threatens Your Health, Proctor's earlier Cancer Wars: How Politics Shapes What We Know And Don't Know About Cancer and Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance, among others. I have also spent many dozens of hours rummaging in the UCSF tobacco archives.

Still, I am learning a great deal from this meticulously-documented book, which articulates the pervasive history of an industry that survives only by addicting children while their brains are developing. I thought I was reasonably familiar with the tactics and the people involved. I was wrong - almost every page reveals more examples. It is especially upsetting to read of the vast number of well-known people who have cooperated with the tobacco industry, even in recent years.

I repeat just one of many horribly-fascinating quotes (p.114), from Bob Herbert's interview with David Goerlitz, the "Winston Man."
'Goerlitz then asked whether any of the company's executives smoke and got this answer: "Are you kidding? We reserve that right for the poor, the young, the black and the stupid."

Tobacco marketeers seem the best in the world, terrifically inventive, but not in a good way. Pitting their skills against the judgement of children seems an unfair match. I'm learning they have been far more inventive than I thought. Adults can do as they wish, but very few adults start smoking and keep doing it. The typical age when adult smokers first started has moved down from the late teens to early teens. Proctor traces the various marketing campaigns that accomplished that goal (pp.71-83).

Proctor also discusses an odd connection of tobacco and climate change (pp.516-518). Tobacco production, distribution and use has a surprisingly high CO2 footprint, starting with cutting trees not just to grow tobacco but to cure it. Perhaps worse, tobacco pioneered many of the disinformation and doubt-creating tactics found pervasively today around environmental issues, as per Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming. Many of the main thinktanks involved in such activities turn out to have long histories of getting money from tobacco companies to help them. (Thank you, tobacco archives. It is a wonderful resource, as Proctor notes.)

The book's blurbs are from real experts, so I can add little, but to say this is very important book.
It will upset people ... and people should be upset.

Scholarship pointing to a solution
By Stephen Hamann
I am pleased to say I have read and greatly enjoyed this book. As others have already stated, the tobacco industry and various of its co-conspirators are exposed in Proctor's Golden Holocaust. This includes a history of lies, fraud, conspiracy to defraud and misrepresent, illegal actions, and entwining politicians, academics, public relations experts and media reporters, and many others in deceiving the public, various government authorities and health officials in believing a manufactured history of the tobacco industry and its products. For tobacco companies, perception is reality, and they are like magicians who use influence, distraction, diversion and timing to free themselves from the chains of their unethical and fatal entrapments. Yet hundreds of millions of their customers are freed only by an early death.

If this was the only message of this book, then it would just be another, very in-depth indictment of an industry already found guilty through the RICO, organized crime law in the US. The US government decision against the tobacco companies runs 1,700 pages and also documents the nefarious history of the industry. What is important to me, in addition to the scholarship in tracing the web of deceit and fraud of the industry, is the fact that the author provides some recommendations for action against the industry. There are 20 recommendations; ten the author calls obvious solutions, mostly designed to reduce demand, and ten that are less obvious, but in my mind more important. History is a teacher that we ignore at our peril, so it is important to see the kinds of supply-side measures and proposals that the author suggests. In the end, the author suggests that manufactured tobacco products be abolished as a fitting realization of our neglect of the reality of tobacco's brutal consequences as a consumer product. His many recommendations are important possibilities for immediate action to get to that final resolution.

I recommend this and other historical books, for example, The Cigarette Century and the free online, Inherently Bad, and Bad Only, which shed light on tobacco control history and how pervasively the tobacco industry has insinuated itself and its products into the consumer culture. The take away message from this book for me is that history should be a motivator to fundamental change of a broken corporate and consumer system which continues to allow the `free trade' of the deadliest, most costly product of all time.

Incredibly important, eminently readable
By Harry Lando
I will not comment in detail because the prior reviews have done an excellent job of summarizing key points of this outstanding resource. What I found unusual in addition to the very impressive scholarship and documentation is how engaging the writing is even when addressing such complex issues as causation and chemical constituents of tobacco smoke. There are many points that are both fascinating and horrifying. Perhaps what surprised me the most is how much I did not know previously despite my many years in this field. I have been actively promoting the book to all those who are concerned about the tobacco epidemic and how this epidemic might be addressed despite the power of the tobacco industry. Golden Holocaust will fascinate scholars and lay readers alike and will be a major reference for many years to come. Even very knowledgeable readers will be surprised by many of the revelations in this book.

No Greater Love: The Helen Baylor Story, by HELEN BAYLOR

Look at Helen Baylor today and you don’t see the anguish of childhood molestation, the isolation resulting from teen-age pregnancy, the desperation of being strung out on drugs, the vulnerability of being homeless, the numbing fear of having witnessed a murder or the pain of being forced to sell her body. You’re too caught up in the purity of her singing, the anointing on her voice. You hear the joy of a changed life.

As a gospel singer, Helen has few peers. There are many who are better known than she but few who can sing from such depth of conviction -- and with such passion. Her story is raw and compromised. She tells of becoming a teen-age singing sensation, of joining the cast of Hair, of hooking up with the Ike and Tina Turner Review, the Captain & Tennille, a Chaka Khan and Rufus. Then she tells of her friendship with cocaine and her promiscuity.

She tells of bright highs and dark lows. She tells of the underside of life and of her glorious deliverance through Jesus Christ. For Helen Baylor, there truly is no greater love.

A Winter's Tale
By CL
As both a historian and a frequent reader of YA literature, I really enjoyed Year of Celt: Imbolc. The characters are well-developed and easy to relate to and that's quite an achievement given that this story is set several millenia in the past. Godfrey is especially apt with Rab, Ariana and Commix, characters who are coming into adulthood as the story begins. The turmoil of those years where everyone must, then as now, navigate between childhood and adult responsibilities while also dealing with a growing sexual awareness is captured convincingly.

The historical backdrop of impending environmental catastrophe and the chaos that comes in its wake is also handled deftly, woven into the story at all levels. While the cautionary message for our own times is clear, it never comes across as a lecture, but rather as a subtle reminder of the impact that a rapidly changing environment may have on all facets of life.

The first part of the story is admittedly a bit slow, but that is often the case for historical novels, especially those set in the distant past as they require the author to provide a bit more context than might otherwise be required. By the second third of the book, however, the action picks up and it's a fast-paced ride.

I'm not sure I would categorize this as a YA book, given that this category often includes pre-teen readers and there are some rather steamy scenes between adult characters in the book. I have a ten-year old who often reads YA, and I'm not sure he'd be comfortable with some of these scenes, although I definitely enjoyed them as an adult reader. Year of the Celt would, however certainly be appropriate for older teens.

The story ends with a cliffhanger and I'm eager to see where it goes in Book Two!

Great historical novel for a YA/teen audience!
By J. Minkman
Year of the Celt is a wonderful book set in a time and place I didn't know too much about before I started reading. It is obvious the author has done his research. As a kid, I loved reading books about history and old civilisations, and this book didn't disappoint in that department. The way the characters and their way of life are described was very natural, no info overkill. I felt their inner thoughts and reasoning were consistent with the time period (certain superstitions and religious notions) and yet, they all felt very relatable. I can recommend this book to young readers (teen/YA) who like history interwoven with a very `human' tale of survival and love.

As I read this book as an e-book, I thought the glossary was a bit too much. Normally speaking, I don't mind if I have to look up the meaning of a word every now and then, but flipping back and forth on an e-reader isn't very convenient. Maybe the old words (like sennight = week) could have just been used in the storyline in such a way that it was obvious what was meant. Now, I felt that a lot of explanation was needed before the story started proper (because there was a list of words and characters right at the beginning) but in my humble opinion, the story would have worked just as well without those explanations and a bit more reliance on the reader's intelligence and interpretation skills.

What I found refreshing was that the story was told in a third-person narrative (rather rare in YA lit these days) but never felt distant or unrelatable (something that might happen if the writer doesn't master the third-person perspective well enough). I really felt like I was there with the characters.

I spotted some missing hyphens and apostrophes which occasionally distracted me, but nothing too serious.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book!

Fresh Setting and Interesting Challenges
By Octavia Randolph
This is a novel "ensemble", with a broad cast of characters - members of the ancient Brigantes, Carvetii, and Caledonii tribes - and set in a most unusual time period, the Yorkshire and Scotland of about 499 BCE. The challenges of a difficult landscape and harsh weather (a mini ice age is upon us) are realistically conveyed; the author is clearly a woodsman and walker with an observant, and sensual, eye, and his passages about hunting and the woodland landscape are amongst his best. Given that no written records remain of these people, there is little attempt to immerse the reader in the atmosphere, emotionally or linguistically, of the Iron Age; the result is a certain incongruity in personal names and use of modern slang ("a close shave"; "bloody" used as an intensifying adjective). But those seeking a fresh background setting for a rousing tale of striving and survival will applaud the attempt. A helpful glossary and series of historical notes are included, including an invitation to actually travel the ancient footpaths trod by the peregrinating main characters.

Classical Architecture for the Twenty-First Century: An Introduction to Design (Classical America Series in Art and Architecture), by Jean

"[A] richly illustrated, carefully explained introduction to classical architecture… Highly recommended." ―Choice

An exceptionally approachable, thorough, informative guide to the theory and technique of designing classical buildings, as taught by a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, this book, generously illustrated with sketches, freehand diagrams, renderings, and photographs, gives a lively, contemporary reality to what sometimes seems a remote subject. It is a practical text for learning how to design buildings in the classical tradition today.

Review
“Beaux Arts take on modern classical architecture―now seen as a broad church including modern masters such as Loos and Wright.” (Architecture Today)

“That this architect is one of the last graduates of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts…should warrant this particular scrapbook a welcome place on the bookshelves of those teaching, working in or interested in the continuance of the Classical architectural tradition...[A]n armchair grand tour, in the company of an astute tour guide.” (Clem Labine's Period Homes)

“[D]elightful: . . . Thoughtful, intelligently illustrated, confidently argued, and very beautiful. . . . [A] most welcome and timely volume.” (Apollo: The International Magazine of Art and Antiques Overview)

Not What The Title Says
By David S. Locicero
i am of two minds about making classical, beaux arts buildings today. on the one hand it does make for fine and elegant buildings. i believe that it is easier for a mediocre designer to produce a decent classical building than a decent modernist building. but i have misgivings about building 21st century buildings aping the style but not the construction systems of 300 years ago. we can't build they way they did, classical buildings today are like stage sets, they look great, but behind the canvas, it's all ropes and scaffolding. so, i was interested to read how and why to do classical buildings in the 21st century.

the author, jean francois gabriel, one of the last graduates of the ecole des beaux arts in paris, now teaches in the united states. he has legitimate classical credibility, unlike graves or the krier brothers.

it is a peculiar book, one part manifesto, one part text book, one part pattern book. it satisfies in none of these catagories. it seems to be written for the student, but has sections clearly directed at teachers, and has appeals to professionals to jump on the classicist bandwagon. the illustrations, many of them hand drawn in ink by the author or hand rendered in washes by his students, are lively, lovely, and engaging. i wish the same could be said of the text. the text is clear, but suffers from poor relationships between the prose and the subject illustrations, making reading somewhat difficult and jerky as your eye scans for the appropriate illustration.

the book's biggest problem, in my opinion, is that it lacks two crucial chapters. had it had a chapter on the orders, described in detail how the orders are rendered, their parts, the proportions of each part to the others, and a chapter on beaux arts planning and methods of composing buildings in plan, this book would have been far more useful to students, teachers and professionals. the orders are discussed, but not in depth or detail. thomas gordon smith's book, classical architecture/rule & invention provides a fine example of what is missing with regard to describing the orders. and frustratingly, the only mention of beaux arts organizational planning is a single throw away line about using axises and enfelades. okay...how?

the organization of the book seemed peculiar to me. in the midst of the discussions of how to treat rooms and outdoor spaces, there is a chapter on how to make watercolor wash renderings, followed by more chapters about massing and facades. the rendering chapter might have been better omitted, or placed at the end as an appendix.

there is little discussion of why classical architecture should be adopted in the 21st century, nor is there any discussion of how classical architecture gets adapted to the very different needs, uses and building types of the 21st century. it's a pretty book, i love the drawings, but of very limited usefulness to students, teachers or professionals.

Superbly filling a need
By Steven W. Semes
THis book is a critically important and necessary tool for anyone wanting to understand classical architecture, whether to gain greater appreciation of historic buildings or in order to make new ones. Professor Gabriel's book is intended as a textbook for the study of classical design, whether in a formal architectural course or independently. In pursuit of this aim, the book presents thorough treatments of the major principles and techniques related to the discipline. His presentation of the underlying principles of classical planning, the orders, proportion, and ornament are very accessible and complete. The author manages to de-mystify the subject, while at the same time giving us an enhanced sense of the artistry behind all the examples he uses. Exhaustive treatment of the individual subjects is not his aim, but I found his comments both informative and subtle. Readers wishing to pursue any of the subjects in greater detail can avail themselves of the many references cited.

One the great advantages of Gabriel's book is that it includes so many examples from his native French tradition. Americans tend to know little in detail about French architecture and theory. This book deepens our acquaintance with the well-known architects, such as Mansart and Ange-Jacques Gabriel, but also introduces lesser known and modern French masters, most notably Emilio Terry.

Gabriel's instruction in watercolor wash rendering technique is very helpful, and the examples he illustrates, all by his former Syracuse University students, demonstrate that these skills can be learned and a high degree of proficiency attained today.

I found the book excellent in presenting this material in a way that appeals to both younger and more mature students of design. It is a welcome and needed resource.

A superb introduction to classical architecture
By A Writer
This book was recommended to me by an architect. It clearly explains and illustrates the basic principles of classic architecture. The drawings and photographs are particularly well chosen. Though this book is not a difinitive guide, it is the best book that I have found for the reader looking for a basic understanding of the principles. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter on "the ten timeless cannons" of classical architecture as well as the chapter entitled "The language of classical architecture: fifteen things to know."

I think that the reader would find it very useful to combine reading this book with another book: Traditional Construction Patterns, by Stephen A. Mouzon.

I highly recommend Classical Architecture, which was written in association with (and recommended by) CLASSICAL AMERICA.
