Without reservation or hesitation, I recommend PHOENIX RISING.
It contains absolutely disturbing parallels to current history and actually caused me to break out in a cold, fear-induced sweat. Easily the most terrifying novel I have ever read by far!!!

About the Author
Norman Lebrecht is one of the most widely read commentators on music and cultural affairs. Based in London, his columns appear in many languages, including Chinese, and he is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 3, Bloomberg and New York's WNYC. He has written twelve books about music, among which The Maestro Myth (1991) and Maestros, Masterpieces and Madness (2007) provoked lasting debate. He is also an award-winning novelist, collecting a Whitbread Prize for The Song of Names in 2002.

Not curmudgeonly. Not in the slightest.

Norman Lebrecht, for those unfamiliar with him, is an institution in the field of music commentary and criticism, and culture in general. He has his own BBC radio show ("Lebrecht Live") , as well as a weekly syndicated newspaper column (now in the London Evening Standard, formerly in the London Daily Telegraph), and is the author of a number of books besides this one. More often than not, Lebrecht can be a curmudgeon with the best of them (but always with the thought in mind of provoking one to think more deeply than usual), and seems to be one of the surviving few these days who can write in the style of the feuilleton (a humorous, often sarcastic, style of arts essay once common in Paris during Berlioz's time, and then brought to even higher heights in fin-de-siècle Vienna when Heinrich Heine "imported" the genre from Paris).

But there is nothing curmudgeonly about "Mahler Remembered," Lebrecht's anthologizing of reminiscences by people who knew Gustav Mahler. Instead, this is a chronological capturing of these reminiscences - many of them appearing in print for the first time - to provide a portrait of Mahler hard to find elsewhere, at least not in any single volume such as this. (The closest book, in terms of recording of reminiscences, is likely "Mahler: His Life, Work and World" by Kurt and Herta Blaukopf. There is some overlap, but Lebrecht's quotations seem fuller, and several in Lebrecht do not appear in Blaukopf.)

Among the highlights are an extended essay by Alfred Roller (Mahler's stage director at the Vienna Court Opera), describing Mahler's physical attributes from an artist's perspective (and giving the lie to any thought that Mahler was less than a fine physical specimen), a humorous tribute by Leo Slezak (a fine Wagnerian tenor in Mahler's troupe) who was not always highly motivated but who, in retrospect, realized that Mahler brought out the best in him, and tributes by his many acolytes, most particularly Arnold Schoenberg, Otto Klemperer and Bruno Walter, as well as famous musicians still remembered today, including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ferrucio Busoni and Fritz Kreisler. Of these, Busoni's is perhaps the most moving: It was at Mahler's very last concert, in New York, that he had premiered Busoni's "Berceuse élégaique," and it was Busoni who traveled in the company of Mahler on his final journey home from New York to Vienna by way of Cherbourg.

But the book goes well beyond these few names, and these brief highlights. Lebrecht seems to have found something from everyone of significance whose life or career intersected Mahler's, and quite a few from people of no particular historical significance at all save that they knew him and wrote something that is now part of posterity. What emerges is as full a personal portrait of Mahler as one is likely to find without collating bits and pieces from multiple sources and volumes.

I could manage to find only two unfavorable reminiscences, both of them "expected" (and quite well-known) from my earlier readings of writings on Mahler. One is by Franz Schmidt, a near-contemporary composer who was also the principal cellist in Mahler's Vienna orchestra, and the other is by Henry Krehbiel, the very influential music critic of the New York Tribune during the years Mahler spent in America. In Schmidt's case, one can easily read past the professional jealousy that generated his rant; he was after all not nearly as well-known a composer, and was an instrumentalist who chafed under Mahler's directorship. A little bit of historical perspective (not provided by Lebrecht) serves as well to explain Krehbiel's antagonism toward Mahler (a composer whose works he wasn't able to fathom): By the time that Mahler had arrived in New York, in the fall of 1907, Richard Strauss - both "friend and rival" and self-promoter without equal - had already established himself as the paragon of Germanic composers of the day.

A final somewhat off-topic comment. I thought, perhaps, that in Lebrecht's book I had found another small clue in the matter of what I've come to call "the Mahler-Ives connection" (the story, seemingly true, that Mahler had acquired a fair copy of the score to Ives's Third Symphony during his final year in New York, but didn't live long enough to perform it). Two persons who wrote reminiscences included by Lebrecht were Ossip Gabrilowitsch (a well-known pianist of the time), and his wife, Clara Clemens (daughter of Mark Twain and a concertizing singer). Twain was a close friend of Ives's father-in-law, Reverend Joseph Twichell, who married not only Charles and Harmony Twichell Ives but also Ossip and Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch. But it seems that a possible Mahler-Ives connection by way of Gabrilowitsch and Clemens is pretty much a dead-end: Harmony, despite being president of the Mark Twain Society, didn't think highly of Clara Clemens. And Ives thought so little of Gabrilowitsch that it doesn't even bear mentioning in the context of Lebrecht's book.

If you are one who thinks of Mahler in terms of his being autocratic and domineering, too tough on his musicians, and someone who was "a curiosity in his time," not to mention harboring thoughts of his being less than a first-rate composer, best that you stay away from this book; too many people who knew him felt differently, as Lebrecht's anthology makes clear. For everyone else, I consider Lebrecht's book a "must read."

This is a very informative book and a quick read. If you want to learn about the most up to date ways and practices that developers and companies are using (PSR Standards, Unit Testing, Composer, and SO much more.). This book is a great way to get the information quickly and get started implementing them into your workflow right away! I highly suggest this book for anyone developing in PHP, whether you are just starting out or have been developing in PHP for a while there is a lot of great information in the book.

Pretty new to object PHP

Pretty new to object PHP, though I had done a bunch of procedural stuff in the past. But after getting this book and reading just the first half, I all of a sudden feel like I have a MUCH better understanding of PHP than I ever did before. HIGHLY recommend, as long as you know the basics, this can get you thinking and operating at a somewhat higher level in no time at all. I've always thought great things about O'Reilly books, but I'll be looking for other books by Josh Lockhart as well...

I've been using PHP for 15 years and found this book to be extremely helpful in explaining all the newer features that make it even more useful. The author does a great job of explaining the concepts, I would recommend this book to anyone who already has an intermediate or advanced understanding of object-oriented PHP and wants to take it to the next level.

An excellent, step by step process to making things happen

Like the book points out, I am one of those guilty of setting goals, some large, most small and then losing site of them because of daily distractions. This book is going to help me stay on track by breaking down exactly, the steps I should be taking to make those goals happen. It's simple to understand, and implement. This is the kind of book I will refer back to with every new idea or achievement I want to push forward on. Even if just a reminder, having it available so I can quickly go over the steps I need to make things happen. I also like the way it reminds me, if things dont go as planned, its just a signal to relook at the steps I chose and revamp where neded, but not give up the goal. This is an encouraging, positive approach, when things are not going as planned.

Planning & Achieving Goals Made Simple

I never knew just how complex every day tasks can be to plan. Most of us make decisions and plan our goals sub-consciously but this book puts a lot of in-depth information about how we do this into an easy to understand format. It allows the reader to make simple plans in order to achieve their goals with more success and more effectively.

On the first couple of pages I found this - "The better I am at planning and executing, the better the value, quality, and satisfaction I will achieve." This says it all for me.

If you want to be able to plan your time and achieve what you want, get this book.

This book has five very basic parts:

1. Set your goal
2. Measure or monitor your success in achieving the goal
3. Take sufficient time in planning out how to achieve your goal
4. Take time every week to review your progress and interact with your team of helpers
5. Don't give up

In my opinion, chapter 3 should have preceded chapter 2. Before you can monitor your success you have to of planned what your goal is already.

I gave the book 4 stars because it really lacks having a quality that motivate people to make changes in their life. I was really considering giving the book 3 stars because it is so short.

The second, "Dolce," set in 1941 in a farming village under German occupation, tells how peasant farmers, their pretty daughters and petit bourgeois collaborationists coexisted with their Nazi rulers. In a workbook entry penned just weeks before her arrest, N??mirovsky noted that her goal was to describe "daily life, the emotional life and especially the comedy it provides." This stunning book contains two narratives, one fictional and the other a fragmentary, factual account of how the fiction came into being. Suite Francaise itself consists of two novellas portraying life in France from June 4, 1940, as German forces prepare to invade Paris, through July 1, 1941, when some of Hitler's occupying troops leave France to join the assault on the Soviet Union. At the end of the volume, a series of appendices and a biographical sketch provide, among other things, information about the author of the novellas. Born in Ukraine, Irene Nemirovsky had lived in France since 1919 and had established herself in her adopted country's literary community, publishing nine novels and a biography of Chekhov. She composed Suite Francaise in the village of Issy-l'Eveque, where she, her husband and two young daughters had settled after fleeing Paris. On July 13, 1942, French policemen, enforcing the German race laws, arrested Nemirovsky as a stateless person of Jewish descent. She was transported to Auschwitz, where she died in the infirmary on Aug. 17.

The date of Nemirovsky's death induces disbelief. It means, it can only mean, that she wrote the exquisitely shaped and balanced fiction of Suite Francaise& almost contemporaneously with the events that inspired them, and everyone knows such a thing cannot be done. In his astute cultural history, The Great War and Modern Memory,Paul Fussell describes the invariable progression from the hastily reactive to the serenely reflective of writings about catastrophes: The significances belonging to fiction are attainable only as 'diary' or annals move toward the mode of memoir, for it is only the ex post facto view of an action that generates coherence or makes irony possible.

We can now see that Nemirovsky achieved just such coherence and irony with an ex post facto view of, at most, a few months. In his defense, Fussell had not heard of Suite Francaise, and neither had anyone else at the time, including Nemirovsky's elder daughter, Denise, who saved the leatherbound notebook her mother had left behind but refused to read it, fearing it would simply renew old pains. (Her father, Michel Epstein, was sent to Auschwitz several months after her mother and was consigned immediately to the gas chamber.) Not until the late 1990's did Denise examine what her mother had written and discover, instead of a diary or journal, two complete novellas written in a microscopic hand, evidently to save scarce paper. Denise abandoned her plan to give the notebook to a French institute preserving personal documents from the war years and instead sent it to a publisher. Suite Francaise appeared in France in 2004 and became a best seller.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the back story of Suite Francaise is irrelevant to the true business of criticism. But most readers don't view books from such Olympian heights, and neither, for that matter, do most critics. If they did, publishers' lists wouldn't be so crowded with literary histories and biographies, those chronicles of messy facts from which enduring art sometimes springs. In truth, Suite Francaise can stand up to the most rigorous and objective analysis, while a knowledge of its history heightens the wonder and awe of reading it. If that's a crime, let's just plead guilty and forge ahead.

This is a magnificently written book (also available in English). It is historically accurate (I was in France in June 1940) and describes beautifully and with deep understanding the changing ambience of the time and the individual and collective behavior of Frenchmen (and women) from diverse economic groups as well as that of the German invaders (the newly arrived onquerors)...

War and Peace in France

A beautifully written, deeply moving description of the Nazi invasion and the Vichy aftermath. Clear and precise language, compelling and engaging characters. The author's perception of the inner lives and especially the moral self-delusion of her characters is amazing. The spectrum of nobility is very narrow, the range of misbehavior broad. There are few happy families. There are lots of unhappy families dividing their efforts between self-preservation and self-justification. The invaders who are active but unseen in the first book become real characters in the second. The soldiers billeted with French civilians aren't monsters, but their role as conquerors makes it nearly impossible for them to do the right thing as individuals.

Fascinating

This is the French version of the book, and it has a lot of introductory information about the author that the English version doesn't. I bought both to read with my other bilingual friend, as sometimes it helps to learn translation techniques. The story is engaging, and I hate that it ended where it ended - I was dying to see what would happen! Thankfully, this version also has more information from the author's notes that give you an idea of what certain characters were going to do and how they were planned to interact.

There is extremely detailed character development and description, more reminiscent of a 19th century style, so you need to have a little patience. Some characters that are carefully developed don't seem to have much action. It is, however, almost like watching a movie of the German invasion of France... you watch people from all types of backgrounds react to the chaos. Very interesting.

Taken to the Extreme

In Submission, the first book of Master Alex Ironrod's "Leather Master and Slaves" trilogy, Tarquin Charlton and Paul Everest evolve their relationship while trying to discover their real selves. Then, in Domination, Tarquin and Paul struggle to define the role each will play in their combined lives and growing leather family. And now, in the third chapter, they must now work on the tricky balance when a new submissive arrives with an agenda of his own. Which leads to their "Obsession."

As in his previous two novels, Alex Ironrod explores and brings depth of character to his protagonists, a rare thing in kinky books. Tarquin and Paul must seek the trail in what becomes an increasingly dangerous game as Rufus, a British actor set to star in a US television series, begins to work his overt and covert manipulations on the relationship. Along with the help (or meddling) of The Circle of Six, Paul and Tarquin have their boots full.

What Master Alex continues to do is make his characters smart and kinky, with dungeon filled with tools but a life outside the kink. All three of his books are terrific examples of just how good leatherotica can be, and his short story collections ([...] and The Ironrod Chronicles II) are also excellent reads.

Not to be missed

A powerful and profound film that documents how our personal and collective shadows influence our lives. Intense and thought provoking, I felt this film explores our world through the len of the shadow and leaves us looking at the roots of our world's problems. It offers hope in showing us the power we have access to if we are willing to deal with our shadow self. If you are interested in moving foward in your spiritual life and shifting consciousness, I highly recommend seeing this film. It is a must for anyone wanting to undestand the struggle they feel inside themselves between their greatness and feeling completely unworthy and undeserving of love and good things.

Both challenging and enlightening...

This book featuring Debbie Ford, Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson evolved out of the movie The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self that recently brought the three of them together. While the movie serves as an introduction to the concepts of the shadow and how it limits us as human beings, The Shadow Effect book is a deep exploration of that which most of us have hidden and tried to contain within ourselves. Of the three authors, Ford contributes the most clarity and definition to what the shadow is and how it shows up in our lives. But all share equally valuable information and insightes from their unique perspectives, offering a depth of experience and wisdom on this most vital of topics. Reading this book is both challenging and enlightening. It can be depressing as we learn the truth of who we are, yet hopeful as we discover the power that the comes from healing and integrating the Shadow. This is a must read for anyone committed to supporting a shift in consciousness on the planet.

The Shadow Effect- a must see movie

This is the best movie of its genre I have seen. It speaks to a topic that is so appropriate to the times we are in and covers it straight forward, to the point. What makes this movie stand out even further from other "transformational" movies, is that it offers clear and concise real life examples and provides the viewer with tools and ways to apply the principles in their life and their world.
