LESLIE C. ALLEN is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic & Judaism at London Bible College, where he has taught since 1960. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics & Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the Univ. College of London, in Hebrew. Among his publications are The Greek Chronicles Parts 1 and 2 and The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah and Micah for The NIC.

Below expectations

Pros: very few. Other books a quite similar or better description:

Cons:
Only 10% of the figures are actual X-rays. 90% are just plain figures and schemes.
Supplementary website does not work and customer service is not accessible.
it is not a guide as title claims - but bullet point summary of radiology.

Shop for another book. I took this book at library for evaluation and quite glad I did not purchase it.

Great e-book, would prefer the hard copy.

I really like this book. As an e- edition it is easy to "search" for things that you are looking for. It would be immensely better if the page numbers were still present in the kindle version to help with orientation when instructors recommend reading certain pages. That would be my only negative to this version of the book.

It's dense. It's hard to get through. But honestly, I don't know if that's the fault of the publisher or book so much as the field. Outside resources are helpful, and this has lots of information that's helpful and topical (just have a cup of coffee in hand when reading it).

one good run : The Legend of Burt Munro

Just brilliant. A great true storey of perseverance persistence and dedication to his one love his trusty Indian Scout.

Having bought it brand new in 1920 as a 21 year old, then selling and eventually buying it back. Burt was self taught as a mechanic engineer and manufacturer.

As parts were modified he made them, and made them using the most rudimentary tools and any second hand materials he could find.

From a small rural town in New Zealand he took his, by now, much modified bike to Bonneville Salt Flats and 200 miles an hour, when the bike was more than forty years old.

This book is called The Worlds Fastest Indian in other markets, the same name as the equally brilliant movie which hi-lights some of Burt's adventures. He loved to travel to America and the people he met there. He most certainly loved riding and modifying his Indian Scout.

A great book

I saw the movie first and absolutely loved it. Got the book from Europe after two failed attempts to order in the US.

It is an inspiring story with a good mix of technical detail and personal info about Burt Munro. It's well written all in all, not high literature, but a good bio style. Captivating and easy to read. Has some nice photographs also.

I loved the movie but thought that some scenes must have been exaggerated for dramatic purposes. Reading the book made me rethink: attaching a tree to the trailer to fix a lost wheel, old men need love too, mowing grass by burning it with gas,... It all appears in the book also, maybe slightly rearranged in the timeline though. Some things the man has done make you shake your head in disbelief.

If you like bikes, liked the movie, and like to read, you more than likely will enjoy this book also.

Good story about a unique man

If you've seen, and loved, The World's Fastest Indian, you might want to think twice about reading this book. Despite a good deal of romantization on the part of author Tim Hanna, the Burt Munroe depicted here is not exactly the kindly old coot seen in the movie. The real Munroe was a single-minded, often difficult, man who, in truth, abandoned his family, and ignored a good many social graces in order to pursue his one interest single mindedly.

But then, history is rarely made by gentle, accomodating people, and in this regard, the real Burt Munroe does not disappoint. While the movie is charming in its depiction of the kindly innocent abroad, the real story is much more complex, and in the end, much more interesting. Munroe was anything but the naiive innocent abroad on his first (of many) trips to America. He'd lived in Australia, travelled to England and much of the continent, and was quite the sophisticated traveller when he arrived at Bonneville. His knowledge of engineering was indeed largely self taught, but he also took advantage of the wisdom and experience (and good graces) of many others who advised him along his way.

Hanna does a very good job of telling Munroe's story- although he is perhaps a bit too eager to recreate conversations and internal monologues for my tastes. Still, it does help to move the narration along. And he does treat Munroe's relationship with his family rather perfunctorily, although I suppose it could be argued that it's not really the aspect of his life that people are most interested in.

Fans of motor racing and motorcycles will find much to enjoy here, particularly as George Begg's biography of Munroe (which Hanna acknowledges was a major source) is no longer in print.

A really fun way to learn serious stuff

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in such a delightful way, as the great philosopher Mary Poppins once said. Mr. Gonick knows how to teach serious material in a fun and easily understood way. All of his academic graphic novels are worth reading if you deal with the subject at hand. I'm a substitute teacher and use them to get some grounding in various subjects. The regular teachers are often familiar with his book on their subject, and respect it - some of their teachers used them. History of course is the most entertaining subject, worth reading for fun. The fact that this one goes all the way back to the Big Bang and explains how the Universe and the Earth were formed makes it even better.

Fun and accessible but also packs a of lot of real history.

I had originally bought this book for use in my waiting room. However, some of the sexual humor and the irreverant approach to religious figures meant that it was a "stay at home" book. (Don't tell the IRS)

Now that the book is in its proper place, I should add that I enjoyed it immensely and went on to buy Volumes 2 and 3. (not on my office account though)The book starts with evolution of the earth and its creatures. The pictures were well done and the humor makes the factual material easier to remember.

The bulk of the book deals with the history of the human race. The author does not confine himself to European civilization. Two of my children read all three volumes, and I did not have to hassle them to do it. How often does this happen with other history texts? I am hoping to use their interest in some of the historical topics to encourage them to read other books. Each section of the Cartoon History contains a reference section for those who desire further reading.

Ideally this book should be a companion to serious textbooks on history. However, there are a lot of people who are unwilling and unable to absorb material from textbooks or lectures. People who are visual learners may be able to remember the pictures and the humor when they have trouble remembering college lecutres or long passages of text. I have recommended this and some other of the author's books to individuals who were having trouble with basic college classes.

Don't get me wrong and don't hate me for what I'm about to write

So I think I'm one of the very few people who can't really wrap her head around why people are nuts over this book. Don't get me wrong and don't hate me for what I'm about to write. I'm not saying that it's a bad book or anything. It was ok. The writing was great I just didn't liked the plot and couldn't connect with the characters.Maybe it's just not my cup of tea . Don't take my words for it just read it and maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did.

If you're not a very patient reader (like me) and you don't like reading 70% of the book just to discover that nothing exciting really happens, then more than probably this book is not for you. I was about to give up on it 4 times but I pushed myself because many people recommended it to me. I was thinking that if it has so many 5 stars ratings and good reviews ,then it must be something good. I waited for ....something 'wow' to happen ! Maybe I'm just blind and I'm missing the point of the book.
Don't even get me started on the characters and on Alexandria's annoying switch between her three personas. I just...umm...sorry.Not for me.

Maybe My Expectations Were Too High.....

I expected to love this book. I loved the first 3 books in the "Consequences" series. I saw all the 4 and 5 star reviews for this new release, so I promptly purchased this first installment in a 5 book series. I get that this first book is a set up for the future books, but I was bored to tears. For me this book just dragged. I kept waiting for something of interest to happen when all I got was inner monologue and endless descriptions of this and that....yet, still, nothing of interest happened. Maybe for others this was an except-able build up to the story, but it just failed to keep my interest. Alex/Charli(h) is a 23 year old graduate of Stanford. She has been excepted to Columbia Law School. That makes me assume she is one pretty clever/smart young lady. I was mistaken. Here are my issues....Possible Spoilers Ahead!!!! Read At Your Own Risk!!!!!

Story/Plot....dragged, boring, predictable, and full of cliches. I saw the ending coming a mile away.
Characters......predictable and cliched....over-the top evil Stepdad, weak Mother who does nothing to defend daughter from evil Stepdad, same BFF as any other novel with all the same conversations, token gorgeous gay male friend (cousin). Maybe the next installments will give more light and depth to these characters, but I did not feel it in this installment. Did I mention that every character is beautiful or extremely attractive? Well...surprise, surprise....they were/are.
Contrived, and quite unbelievable, plot twist(s) which forces the female protagonist to be at the mercy of the H in every way. Thank god he's gorgeous, rich, and a god in the sack.

Here's my main issue. The main character Alex/Charli(h) is supposed to be headed to Columbia Law School. Alex comes from a very wealthy Georgian family. She has a trust fund. She has used that trust fund to pay for her education. Evil stepdad informs her that she will not go to school at Columbia. No, she will stay in Georgia and marry because she must carry on the bloodline. What is this, the 1950's? Furthermore, her trust fund has been highjacked, or confiscated, so therefore she no longer has any funds. She is at the mercy of her stepdad and must do as she is told. Well, I had an issue with that. Why didn't the clever Stanford grad student and soon to be Columbia Law student challenge the confiscation of a trust fund she has had for years. There were millions in that fund. Why take her stepdad's word for why the trust fund was taken away from her? She hates and mistrusts that man. No, she just simply excepts the theft of her trust fund. Hmm...Maybe she should have hired a....um...what do you call them? Oh! Yeah! A lawyer! Yeah. Maybe this clever girl, who wants to be a lawyer, should have gotten herself one in order to challenge her evil stepdad. Ugh!

My other issue? I will try not to give too much away here. I will just say that it is illegal for any contract to be legally binding if said contract states that one person is owned by another. A smart girl on her way to graduate school at Columbia Law should, and would, know this. Another ugh!

This is a well written book. I just did not find it to be very original. So far, this story/plot has been done to death numerous times. Maybe as the story progresses I will feel more for both the characters and the plot line. Again, so far, I was just aggravated and bored. I cannot recommend or not recommend. This is the first book in a five book series. This is why I rated this book a 3 star rather than a 2 star. I have no idea where this series will go and I realize this book is a kind of intro to the future books and plot. I can say that this first installment did not pull me in. I do not feel compelled to read the next installment. Based on all the other 4 and 5 star reviews, I am the odd person out, so go ahead and give this first installment a shot. Just don't say I didn't warn ya.

What's the betrayal??

Can't say I cared much for this book. Alex, a southern socialite, is having a relaxing vacay in California for a week before she begins graduate school. She meets a handsome stranger, Nox, and she agrees to spend the week in his bed - no strings attached, no last names, no contact after the week is over.

Fast forward six weeks. Alex has been summoned home to Savannah for the weekend. Her mother and stepfather want to discuss her trust fund with her. But it's more of an ambush. It felt like we were in a different era with the arranged marriages and the women shouldn't work mentality. It was very controlling.Nevertheless, Alex was able to go to law school after all, one semester at least. Then she'll have to find a way to pay for it on her own. This is where the story took a turn I wasn't expecting. It felt like we were getting into a different book.

I kept waiting for Nox to turn back up in Alex's life in some way and it's revealed how in the end. You'll have to continue the series to find out more. Which I discovered will be five books! No thank you. There's nothing original about this story. Plus sometimes I think Romig's characters are a bit uptight in regards to the way they speak. I get it when it was Tony Rawlings but the formality makes me yawn. I won't be continuing the series.

A Wonderful Tool For My Morning Prayer....

According to the back cover, this booklet of tear-out prayer cards came about because of the success of the prayers suggested in the original book, "The Power Of A Praying Wife." Evidently, faithful readers were scribbling the prayers on notepads or ripping them out of the book to keep them handy and so the author collected them in this booklet. I haven't read the original book; I just stumbled across the cards and, they being exactly what I needed, I bought them.
I have a morning prayer routine and I was looking for something to help me focus some of that time on my husband. Being new to prayer, I was hoping there was something more specific out there that I could be praying besides my general, "God, please take care of him and bless his day." THESE CARDS ARE GREAT! They're divided into subject: Me (His Wife), His Health, His Work, His Marriage, His Walk With God, His Purpose, His Talk, etc., and each one includes a bit of scripture at the bottom.
Yesterday's (to give you an example), from His Past, included: "Lord, wherever my husband's past has become an unpleasant memory, I pray You would redeem it and bring life out of it. Bind up his wounds (Psalm 147:3). Restore his soul (Psalm 23:3). Help him to release the past so that he will no live in it, but learn from it, break out of it, and move into the future You have for him."
My favorite section of prayers is the His Wife category in which the author suggests you pray to become a better wife; I pray one His Wife card every day as part of my rosary and then later randomly pick one other. An example? "Lord, help me to be a good wife. . . Take my selfishness, impatience, and irritability and turn them into kindness, long-suffering, and the willingness to bear all things. Take my old emotional habits, mindsets, automatic reactions, rude assumptions, and self-protectiveness, and make me patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. . . Only You can transform me."
The author has also written at least one other Prayer Card booklet, from her book "The Power of a Praying Parent", and I intend to buy it, too, so that I can keep my neices and nephews in daily prayer. I highly recommend these cards.

In Tibetan religious literature, Jamgön Kongtrul's Treasury of Knowledge in ten books stands out as a unique encyclopedic masterpiece embodying the entire range of Buddhist teachings as they were preserved in Tibet.This first book of The Treasury, which serves as a prelude to Kongtrul's survey, describes four major cosmological systems found in the Tibetan tradition --those associated with the Hinayana, Mahayana, Kalachakra and Dzogchen teachings. To suit the capacities of different grades of beings, Buddha taught four levels of cosmology: the numerically definite cosmology of the individual way; the cosmology of infinite buddhafields of the universal way; the special cosmological system of the Kalacakra Tantra; and dazzling non-cosmological system of the Dzog-chen system, which dispenses with the dualistic perspective, revealing the creative principle to be awareness alone. Each of these cosmologies shows how the world arises from mind, whether through the accumlated results of past actions or from the constant striving of awareness to know itself.

This detailed and thorough account of worldviews that present conceptions of space and time which differ significantly from Western ideas is at once illuminating and challenging.

Vast and stunning

"Myriad Worlds" is a translation of the first of ten books in Tibetan contained within the major treatise "The Infinite Ocean of Knowledge", which itself is a commentary on the root verses "The Encompassment of All Knowledge."

From the preface of "Myriad Worlds": The translation of the entire body of "The Infinite Ocean of Knowledge" has been one of (late) Kalu Rinpoche's most ambitious projects. (...) Kalu Rinpoche explained the importance of this work as follows: "(...) If this great work is translated into English, the nature of all samsara and nirvana will appear as vividly as a reflection in a clear mirror in the minds of the most learned people of the world, as though the expanse of their understanding were illuminated with sunlight."

"Myriad Worlds" discusses Buddhist cosmography and the genesis of beings who inhabit the universe.

Kongtrul delineates four levels of cosmology:

1. The numerically definite cosmology of the Individual Way (hinayana), in which the collective force of the evolutionary actions of sentient beings creates the world, and therefore all beings contribute to the creation of the world;

2. The cosmology of infinity buddha-fields of the Universal Way (mahayana), in which infinite world-systems come into being as phantom appearances, through bodhisattvas purifying buddha-fields, in which they may fulfill their heroic vows to liberate all beings. The universe is conceived as a cycle without commencement that repeats itself until all beings are liberated from the sufferings of cyclic existence;

3. The cosmology of the Tantra of the Wheel of Time (Kalacakra), which establishes a correspondence between the macrocosm and microcosm in terms of the formation of the universe and fetal development, and between the configuration of the universe and the shape and size of the human body;

4. The noncosmology of the Dzog-chen (Great Perfection) system, drawing extensively from Longchenpa, in which the primal creative cause of the universe is neither the evolutionary actions of beings nor the interrelationships of the compassion of the buddhas and sentient beings, but rigpa, a state of pure and total awareness, which is nothing other than the primordially pure ground of being itself. Failure to recognize the primordially pure nature of the ground of being is unawareness, which itself arises from intrinsic awareness. The primordial freedom that one seeks to attain by practicing the spiritual path is something that one already possesses. Intrinsic freedom is itself the path that leads to the actualization of the goal.

From the translator's introduction: "Myriad Worlds contains invaluable material for study, reflection, and the refinement of one's mind. (...) and it contains seeds of wisdom that are sure to sprout and blossom in the minds of spiritual aspirants and other attentive readers."

A Surprise

I'm a practicing Buddhist, and generally concerned with practical things. I bought this book, as I was drawn to it for some reason, and was expecting something interesting but maybe a bit abstract, as it is a book on cosmology. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it changed my view of life quite a bit, and since then, I haven't really had a small view of the world, or of mind.

I would highly recommend this book.

Book review of Myriad World

We all know that Buddha's teachings have many levels of understanding. It order to fully understand and fathom the teachings, one needs to be a Buddha. However, for a novice, a simple philosophy also exist - to help understand and then gradually move on the to difficult ones. In this book - Myriad World, the depth and many levels of Buddha's teachings are brought to light. Myriad World is an explanation of Buddhist cosmology. The author has used the interpretation of three different tradition to explain the cosmology. These traditions are : Sarvastivada (very similar with Theravada), Kalachakra (which is of a Vajrayana tradition) and the Dzogchen tradition. The author believes that these three explanations are not contradictory; instead they compliment each other - the explanation found in Kalachakra has a deeper meaning than that of Sarvastivada system, and the author concludes that Dzogchen interpretation is the final view. This book, hence, is a coming together of three great tradition.
Cosmology for many might not be an important/interesting subject to delve in. But in Buddhism, the subject is substantially significant; no wonder Abhidharma is full of it. Unless one knows were one stands, in the context of place, time and ones karma, one can never comprehend - what one is doing and the consequences of ones action. Jamgon Kongtrol, the author of the book, was one of the most famous Buddhist personality of the 19th century Tibet. He was also one of the most prolific writer. Born in a Bonpo family, Control attended Nyingma monastery before moving on to Kagyu monastery, where he stayed and learned the most. This mix background perhaps, molded Control's thought, making him a non-sectarian. He has criticized, in plenty, the sectarian nature of many Buddhist monasteries and its monks. Always believing in a non-sectarian and synergetic approach, the book comes out to reflect this position. Despite considering the Dzogchen interpretation as the final, he never for ones disparages the other views.
After a short biography of the author and a short introductory chapter, the main subject of book is divided in three chapter; explaining in each the cosmological interpretation of Sarvastivada, Kalachakra and Dzogchen. The Sarvastivada interpretation of the cosmology is a popular one and can be understood by majority, with a slight background on Buddhism. However, the Kalachakra and Dzogchen interpretation are complex and takes lot of time and perhaps a guide to understand. Nevertheless, with simple and precise wording throughout, the book is very helpful, despite the difficulty of the subject. A beginner will definitely find it difficult to understand and enjoy the book. Nonetheless, an introductory chapter exist, where the book and the subject matter are explained in a simple manner - which should be helpful.
Translated under the auspices of the late venerable Kalu Rinpoche, the book aims to introduce and keep as much English word as possible, rather than use Sanskrit or Tibetan word. As a result, I encountered several English words used in this context. For example, 'Evolutionary Process' is the English translation for Karma. Instead of using Karma, the book uses 'Evolutionary Process' all the time. There are merits and demerits for using such word, however, in view of the growth and the easy understanding that the word might have, they are justified in using it.
I enjoyed reading the book and I would recommend to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge about Buddhism. I have no doubt that if one can read, especially the Kalachakra and Dzogchen part, more than once and understand the concept fully, this will contribute in more profound understanding of Buddhism.
